Practical ways to Understanding African American Contributions and Experiences in Fashion
There’s been a rise in the use of words like inclusivity, diversity and cultural appropriation in fashion. But what does this really mean and how can we as every day folks understand more about this? Well, I can’t explain all of these meanings in one post but I can at least start with this one!
In the words of sociologist Manuel Castells, “we are in an informational society” at the moment. Which means the world and information from many perspectives are at our fingertips with the click of a button. The click of a button on the internet, that is. Whamo!
Here’s 3 practical ways we can be more in tune with Fashion from an African American perspective, not just during Black History month 😁 but throughout the year:
1 – Start a Group Chat Thread
Add a little color to your fashion conversation by inviting your friends to talk about 3 Current African American Fashion Designers or Fashion Icons in history. Ask them to Google and share one design or contribution in the thread to start the conversation. For some this may be difficult depending on your friend group. Crafting your text message to show how important this is to you may help. But it all starts with one person. If you’d like help you can click here to send an email my way!
2 – Plan a Shopping Trip: Include Online or Local Black Fashion Designers on Your List
Our world is so vast with amazing designers and brands from entirely different places! We can now find more items online that may suit our style. Click here for a list of 23 African American designers and brands to get to know!
3 – Host a Fashion African American Documentary or Show Night
Get your friends together for a night of fashion inspired African American documentaries and shows! There are plenty of fashion documentaries that span the gamut of the industry, but only a few are done from an African American perspective. Below are a few documentaries and show episodes that give further insight into people who are impacting the industry:
- “The Gospel According to André”
- “Fresh Dressed”
- “Styling Hollywood” – Black Girl Magic Episode 1
- “Explained” – Athleisure Season 2 Episode
